In this course, students refine their skills of reading literature with insight and sensitivity, and they develop their writing abilities by composing essays in which they show how writers exercise good craft in composing poems, fiction pieces, and plays. This semester, students will engage two short stories by Melville, a play by Shakespeare, a short novel by Dickens, and poems by (among others) Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, T.S. Eliot, A.E. Housman, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, W.H. Auden, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Seamus Heaney, and Ellen Bryant Voight.
