The Green Grass Cloggers Road Team
Asheville, North Carolina

With feet flying, swirling calico skirts, and high-kicking legs, the Green Grass Cloggers of North Carolina burst onto the national folk festival scene in the early 1970s. Influenced by the styles and attitudes of older traditional flatfoot dancers, the Green Grass Cloggers added to the dance traditions of North Carolina with their own innovative and distinctive style of team clogging.

Green Grass Cloggers formed in 1971, in Greenville, in eastern North Carolina. In 1977, part of the group, "The Road Team," became a full-time touring dance company, relocating to Asheville, in the western part of the state, in 1980. The Asheville Road Team continued touring nationally and internationally until 1987. Meanwhile "The Home Team" continued to perform in the eastern part of the state, where they remain active to this day.

The Green Grass Cloggers Asheville Road Team no longer performs regularly, but in recent years members have dusted off their dancing shoes and reformed as a reunion group. Recent performances have included the Swannanoa Gathering (2001), the Lake Eden Arts Festival (2001), the Appalachian Stringband Festival (2002), the Smithsonian Folklife Festival (2003), and the Philadelphia Folk Festival (2004).

Performance dates for 2006 include MerleFest (April 28-30) and Wheatland Music Festival (September 8-10).
