Outdoor Leadership Course Descriptions


ODL 100 History/Philosophy of Outdoor Adventure Education (2 cr)
This course is designed to give students a broad overview of the field of outdoor adventure education and recreation. Students will become familiar with both private, state and federal organizations that offer such programming. Students will also become familiar with the historical and philosophical roots of adventure education, and job opportunities in the field.

PED 109-128 Outdoor Recreation Activities (4cr)
These are a series of introductory level skill courses that provides instruction in the basic techniques necessary in the outdoor activities of Canoeing, Kayaking, Rock climbing, Winter Camping and Map and Compass. (Fall- Backpacking/Rock climbing) (Spring- Winter Camping & Map and Compass).

ODL 220 Wilderness First Responder (1cr)
This is a course in emergency medical care that addresses the issues of long-term patient care, back country rescue techniques, and survival skills. This is a professionally focused course for those individuals who will be working with groups in backcountry settings. Participants successfully completing the course will be certified in DOT/First Responder, American Red Cross Advanced First Aid and C.P.R.

ODL 210 Backcountry Skills and Techniques (3cr)
This course is designed to provide students with the opportunity to learn and develop those outdoor skills related to back country travel and camping. Specific skills will include environmental ethics, minimum impact techniques as they relate to soil, vegetation, wildlife and the overall effect of our own use, trip planning, menu planning, outdoor cookery, selection of gear and clothing, campsite management, map and compass, techniques of planning, organizing, and leading backcountry trips. Students will participate in two required field trips on two seperate weekends.

ODL 215 Initiatives for Adventure Programming (4cr)
This course is designed to have students learn about the use of initiatives in the development of self-concept, group cooperation, and educational programming. Students will experience a variety of new games and initiatives. Topics will include the use of initiatives for group work, safety techniques, and sequencing of activities. Skill development in the areas of facilitation and debriefing will be stressed. Students may also have the opportunity to plan and implement and day of initiatives and team building activities.

ODL 225 Universal Adventure Programming (4cr)
This course has traditionally been defined as "accessible" adventure programming on a programmatic, environmental, leadership, legal, and equipment modification level for people with and without disabilities. This course seeks to expand that definition to assist students in gaining the knowledge, understanding, and abilities to provide quality adventure programming in relation to staff and participant's race, class, gender and ability- thereby seeking to create socially just outdoor education opportunities for all.

ODL 226 Instructor Development for Outdoor Leadership (8cr)
This is a field-based course that examines teaching, leadership and safety issues pertaining to outdoor adventure education. The course has a strong commitment to the Outward Bound philosophy and methodology. It emphasizes group process effective communication, wilderness medicine, risk management, and basic technical skill development for living and traveling in a back country environment. This is an off-campus course and students who enroll in this course may not be registered for any other course during the term that it is offered.

ODL 227 Top Rope Site Management (2cr)
This course will introduce top rope site management techniques, including site evaluation, hazard evaluation, and minimum impact techniques. Introduction of anchors specific to top roping and rappelling will be taught. Rescues specific to top roping and rappelling will also be covered.

ODL 310 Leadership for Adventure Education (4cr)
This course is designed to examine the theories, principles, and practices of leadership in a wilderness environment. The course will provide direct, first experiences where students will be expected to plan and be in a leadership position both in the classroom and out in the field.

ODL 315 Group Process (4cr)
The basic principles of small group interaction will be explored in both didactic and experiential components of the course. Topics will include listening skills, values clarification, group problem solving, group communication models, stages of group development, debriefing techniques, semantics, leadership models, and termination. Some emphasis will be placed on aspects of group process in a wilderness setting.

ODL 325 Women's Voices in Experiential Education (4CR)
This course is taught in a seminar format, involving students in the exploration of feminist theory and practice as it relates to experiential education and outdoor adventure education. Through readings, discussions, speakers, presentations and an overnight retreat, students explore feminist perspectives of outdoor leadership, the historical contributions of women and some current issues and concerns of women in the field.

ODL 320 Program Planning and Design (4cr)
This course gives an in-depth view of the role that program planning and development plays in adventure education programs, camps, and other organizations. Students will design programs with specific emphasis placed on setting goals, basic program organization, curriculum, budgets, marketing, and evaluation. This is a technical writing course and fulfills the College Composition II requirement.

ODL 350 Trip Leader Practicum (1- 4 cr.)
This is a structured and supervised opportunity for students to co-lead outdoor recreational trips for the Warren Wilson College Outing Program. This experience helps students integrate their academic preparation with its application in a field setting.

ODL 351 Trip Leader Practicum (1-2cr)
A follow-up to ODL 350 with students leading trips for the Outdoor Programs. This experience allows students to further integrate higher-level trip leading skills with their level of academic preparation.

ODL 322 Challenge Course Facilitation and Management (4cr)
The goals for this course are to provide students with the skills, knowledge and experience in using a challenge course facility for educational programming.

ODL 395 Leave No Trace Trainers Course (2cr)
Successful graduates of this course gain skills, knowledge, and expertise to teach LNT Curriculum in a variety of settings such as schools, camps, parks, wilderness, and front country settings.

ODL 410 Administration and Management of Adventure Education Programs (4cr)
This is an advanced study of adventure education programming with special attention to organizational models from an administrative aspect. Major study is placed on goal setting, staffing, budget and public relations, liability and risk management.

ODL 484 Internship Seminar (1cr)
This seminar will focus on helping students identify a placement site that will meet their personal and professional goals. Students will prepare their proposal, and determine appropriate project they will complete during their internships.

ODL 485 Internship (2 - 16 cr.)
An internship is a credit bearing carefully planned, short-term, well-supervised work experience related to the student's academic field. Typically, the job is located off campus with a business firm, nonprofit organization, or government agency. The student may or may not receive monetary compensation, depending upon the arrangements made with the host organization. Internships offer students exceptional, nontraditional educational opportunities.
