FAQ - Fines

If I "lose" a book in my dorm room and find it at the end of the semester, how much will my fines be?
In the past, the library has charged fines for overdue materials, but we are trying a fine-free system. We don't want your money; we want to provide information and great service.

Because it is important that all Warren Wilson College library patrons have full access to information, we need the community to be aware of borrowed materials and to bring them back on time. All students, faculty and staff should return or renew items on or before the due date. If library materials do become overdue, a fee will not be charged for late items, but NO NEW MATERIALS MAY BE CHECKED OUT UNTIL THE PATRON RECORD IS CLEAR. Weekly reminder notices will be sent to all patrons with overdue items. Any books more than 4 weeks overdue will be considered lost and will be charged a lost book fee. Even if a book is returned after being 4 weeks overdue, the patron account will still be charged the lost book fee. Videos not returned after 3 days overdue will also be charged the lost fee. Due to the high demand and quick turnaround of Reserve items, we will continue to charge fines for these materials.

Just as patrons cannot check out materials from our library if they have overdue items or outstanding fines, patrons will not have the privilege of requesting materials through interlibrary loan or of receiving cooperative borrower cards for UNC-Asheville.

For this system to work, patrons are expected to be responsible for the items they have checked out. To ensure that materials are checked out to the correct person and to make the check-out process more efficient, we will require patrons to have their ID card whenever any materials are needed.

If you really lose a library book or if it is damaged, you will be charged a minimum of $55.00.
