Dr. Philip Otterness, Department Chair
The History and Political Science Department has several overarching goals. First, we wish to nurture within our students a sense of educated skepticism (not cynicism) toward the accepted truths of politics, government, and history. Second, and closely related to the first goal, we want students to understand that history and political science are disciplines based on informed argument. Third, we encourage students to see the complexity of the world's politics and history, meaning that a critical, sophisticated, and educated approach is necessary for the mature understanding of the issues of these disciplines. By emphasizing these goals, we hope our graduates will leave Warren Wilson College as engaged and active citizens, who understand the importance of politics and the interplay of history in the world that they inhabit and shape.
