Music has long been a vital part of worship at the Warren Wilson Presbyterian Church. Previously, each Director of Music (John Connet, Dr. Robert Keener, Dr. Schuylar Robinson, and Dr. Steven Williams) has been a member of the College’s Music faculty. Our current music director and organist is Ms. Vivian Hare, who is not affiliated with the college.
For many years student ensembles from the College provided music for worship services. In the mid-1980s, Dr. Williams formed the Chapel Choir, which now includes students, current and former faculty and staff of the College, members of the church as well as members of the larger community. The Chapel Choir sings regularly for our Sunday morning worship service and also sings on the first Sunday of most months during the academic year at worship services at the nearby Veterans Administration Hospital.
Organ music has held an important part of the worship experience as well. The organ/choir loft was a carefully considered in the design of the building. The organ/choir loft is located behind and above the congregation as is found frequently in European churches. The 1964 23-rank Schantz organ was recently renovated and enlarged to the present 75-rank Schantz-Angerstein, a magnificent instrument combining pipe and digital voices.
