We had a day of great activity with many guests today. Mr. John George and Ms. Sandra Reinhardt from the Catawba Nation joined us for a site tour. Mr. George is a specialist in tribal medicine and he performed a blessing ceremony for the site and the crew. Other visitors included administrators from Western Piedmont Community College, Rodney Snedeker and Mike Harmon, archaeologists with the National Forests in North Carolina, and Dr. Tom Whyte and his students with the Appalachian State University Archaeology Field School. We also had a visit from a Charlotte Observer reporter. Watch for the Berry site in the newspapers! We prepared for all the guests by cleaning the units around Structure 1 to show the wall of the burnt building. It is quite a spectacular site.
James Berry brought this whole pot to the site today. The pot was found on the site by James' grandparents. This is a small jar that is typical of Burke style pottery vessels.
